Here is a sample from our Alphabet Photography collection.

This set spells out the word NATURE using letter forms with a natural theme.

Our standard presentation is a 5X7 size printed in a stylish sepia tone (but we can print larger, and in black & white if you prefer this look)

We do our own printing onto canvas, treat the canvas for protection, and then stretch it over a wooden plaque that can then be hung on your wall or set on a shelf/mantle.

The South African Turban Shell & Shiva Shell

The Turbinidae family includes the shells known commonly as turban shells. The South African turban (Turbo Sarmaticus) is one of the most appreciated and sought after by shell enthusiasts. This is especially true once polished to reveal the attractive nacre of the inner layer.

Found on the shores of South Africa and the Philippines. This particular species grows to approximately 3 inches.It is the unmistakable shell markings and coloration that make these shells a prized possession among collectors. The silvery white mother-of-pearl deposits, combined with its natural rusty brown color make the outer shell patterns fascinating and the perfect inlay material for jewelry items.

Shiva shell, also known as Shiva Eye or Pacific Cat's Eye, is the protective covering at the opening of the Turban snail shell (Turbo Smaragdus). Towards the end of the snail’s natural life this protective covering (known as the operculum) detaches and sinks to the seabed.

On one side of the Shiva shell is a beautiful spiral. The exact shape of the spiral is unique from shell to shell. The color varies from beige to deep green, depending on the sea snail's diet, while the background always remains pearly white.

On the reverse side of the spiral is a mesh of colors that resemble an eye, which is where the shell’s alternate name derives from.The Eye of Shiva is the third eye in the middle of the forehead of the Hindu God Shiva. Representing wisdom it is thought to have the ability to look beyond the obvious. It symbolizes the creation, preservation and destruction of everything, the flow of life, the constant change of the universe, spiritual knowledge and creative visualization.

Abalone Shell Jewelry

Abalone are mollusks (soft bodied, shelled animals such as clams and oysters) that belong to the genus Haliotis. It is widely thought that there are around 100 to 130 species of abalone including hybrids.

They reside in a one-piece shell, which is rounded or oval in shape with a row of respiratory pores along one side. The abalone hugs tightly to rocky surfaces and must be pried loose.

There are numerous types, including: black, flat, pink, green or blue, pinto, red, threaded, and white. Found in temperate or tropical seas they feed principally on algae. Abalone are characterized by a richly colored inside shell made of nacre with a rough, brown colored outer shell. Revealing the lustrous beauty of the outer shell is a careful process of abrasion and polishing techniques.

Abalone is known as ormer in the English Channel, awabi in Japan, muttonfish in Australia and paua in New Zealand. The meat of this mollusk is considered a delicacy in certain parts of Latin America (especially Chile), South East Asia, and East Asia (especially in China, Japan, and Korea)

Throughout history this beautiful shell has been much sought after. In ancient times, royalty decorated their robes and turbans with them, while women adorned themselves with abalone shell jewelry.

Today, many forms of jewelry are designed with the unique characteristics and beauty of the abalone. As well as jewelry, the vibrant abalone shell pieces are used as decorative inlay in furniture, guitars, and ornaments.

We are really excited about our new pressed flower handbags; Ashley, Ashton, Ashton II, Mia, and Morgan. (yes, we have given names to all our real flower handbag collection!) Each item is a one-of-a-kind with it's own personality, shape, and floral design.

We have been working this week on getting the new bags on the site because we have had people emailing us asking when they would be available.

Johnette and i took a short trip to Stone Mountain yesterday to take some pictures of the bags against a natural setting. She modeled, and i took the pictures (better that way round i think!) Stone mountain in NC is a beautiful place to go hiking, take a picnic, or just go for a drive and take in the scenery.

Well, Johnette did her modeling thing and i am really happy with the pictures. Here's a sample of some of the new pressed flower handbags that we have on the site. We have added a new page to our Nature by Dezign web site which hopefully explains the ins and outs of RSS. The page is called 'What are RSS feeds?' which can be found in the main menu of our home page or by following the link above.

This is what the page looks like below. It goes on to explain what that orange symbol means and how you can subscribe to the Nature by Dezign RSS feed. Basically, the feed will enable you to receive all of the latest news and updates from this blog in a simple headline format without having to visit the site every time you want to see if i have posted something new. It is a convenient and time saving way to keep up with all of your favorite web sites and blogs.

RSS is a great new tool that is changing the way we receive the information that is important to us on the internet. OUR 1ST ANNIVERSARY!

Johnette and i celebrated our 1st wedding anniversary this weekend! Saturday day was spent at the Yadkinville festival selling our shiny things and the pressed flower handbags. It was nice to be doing a local show (Yadkinville is only a stones throw from us, and it was nice to be there because that is where we got married last year!)

Thank you to everyone who stopped by and of course to those who bought something!

We then decided to go out that evening to celebrate our anniversary, and enjoyed a really nice meal at Wasabi in Greensboro. Thank you to our server (forgot to ask her name) for taking this and a bunch of other good pictures. The sushi was excellent and we still have a fuzzy head from the champagne so that is a sign of a good night out!

This coming weekend we will be at the Shenandoah Caverns Wine Festival so feel free to come and find us if you are in the area. For more details on the festival just follow the link.

Just a few lines to say thank you to everyone who dropped by at our booth this weekend at the Morganton festival. It was a very well organized event with good music, and a good mix of food and craft vendors.

This was a great opportunity for us to showcase our nature inspired fashion items to a large audience looking for those early Christmas gifts! We particularly enjoy doing these events because it gives our customers the chance to see our products in person!

As i spend more and more time on the internet these days updating our site and marketing it, i come across quite a few cool new products. Johnette suggested adding these to this blog to share with you some of the new jewelry designs, handbags, and other hot fashion items that catch our eye.

The Akuamarina Collection is something that has really stood out recently. Using Italian sterling silver and murano glass the artist combines Italian jewelry making traditions with modern flare, to form unique and exciting pieces.

LENOIR BLACKBERRY FESTIVAL

BERRY GOOD FUN!

Only an hour's drive from us (which turned out to be an hour and a half after taking the wrong turning!) Lenoir in NC held their 5th annual Blackberry festival on Saturday. This was our first year attending as a vendor, and we will definitely be returning for the 6th annual!

The whole day was good fun and well attended. There was a good mix of attractions, live music, and events (including a blackberry eating competition!) The rain made its scheduled appearance around 2pm, but it failed to dampen everyone's enjoyment.

We met a lot of friendly people, and we would like to say thank you to everyone who came by to see us. Quite a few people mentioned that they had read in the local newspaper about our real flower handbags and they wanted to check them out. I'm guessing Cathy (who expertly organized the event) ran an advertisement leading up to the festival.

Well, the real flower handbags went down really well and so too did our jewelry. All of those people who signed up for our newsletter will be entered in for our monthly prize draw. This month we are giving away a "Sarah" real flower handbag and a matching flower wallet.

REAL FLOWER HANDBAG SIGHTING

Flower Power

We received a cool email this week from someone in South Carolina who bought one of our "Stephanie" real flower handbags.

She explained how she was visiting her parents in Florida and they went out for the day on a shopping spree. She goes on to explain that she was carrying her new real flower handbag and mid-spree they decided to stop for something to eat.

Her mother notices, sitting at another table, a woman also carrying one of our real flower handbags!

She didn't say which design it was but she did go over to the woman on their way out and exchange stories on where they got their pressed flower handbags.

It turns out the other woman purchased hers from us at a show we did in Florida back in March.

It was nice to hear that our real flower handbags are being spotted out and about! So if anyone else has a similar experience we would love to hear about it or better still if you have your camera with you, take a snap and forward it on to us and we'll post it on here.

PRESSING FLOWERS

Once you have made your flower press (see previous post on how to do this) you will want to start pressing your flowers immediately! This guide will outline the simple steps you will need to follow to do this.

First gather the flowers that you want to press. The ideal flowers to use are those that aren't too thick, and that will maintain their beauty when flattened. Thinner flowers dry faster and are easier to press. The faster a flower dries the better it will keep it's color.
You can press thicker flowers like roses, but it is generally thought for best results you must press the rose petals individually and then glue them back together.
Here is a list of flowers that are good for pressing : Geranium, Azalea, Hydrangea, Ferns, Daisy, Buttercup, Crocus, Sweet Pea, Pansy, Daffodil, Chrysanthemum, Marigold, Rose Petals.
So, take the top off your press and place the sheet of blotting paper on the base of the press.
Then, arrange some of your flowers and leaves on the blotting paper flattening them down so they will dry evenly. Also lay them down so there is space between them and they don't touch.
Then, add a few sheets of newspaper on top of the flowers making sure the newspaper doesn't overlap the blotting paper.
Then repeat the process and lay another sheet of blotting paper, more flowers, and more newspaper on top. You can repeat this again and again, adding more layers of blotting paper, flowers and newspaper as long as you can still fit the top of the press on, the washers, and are able to tighten up the wing nut.

Generally the small flowers will dry in 5 days to a week. Flowers are dry when they are rigid and crisp throughout. Do not remove the flowers until they are completely dry. Remove them carefully by sliding a knife under the flower and lifting them up. Do not pull at the petals because you might tear them.

MAKING YOUR OWN FLOWER PRESS

.For anyone interested in pressing your own flowers, i have put together a simple guide on how to make your own flower press! (Of course you could just use a heavy book instead!)

This step by step guide will explain how to make your very own flower press in a matter of minutes. There is no need to go out to the store and buy one for $$$ when you can simply follow these simple instructions and make one yourself, enabling you to immediately begin pressing your own flowers!

YOU WILL NEED:

Two pieces of plywood cut to equal size (10" x 12" will be large enough) These will be for the top and bottom of the press.
4 carriage bolts 1/4 inch thickness. The bolts need to be pretty long, so allow about 2 inches more than the thickness of the two pieces of plywood sandwiched together. So somewhere around 3 and a half inches in length would be good.
4 washers that will fit the bolts.
4 wing nuts 1/4 inch thickness.
Absorbent paper. Blotting paper would be perfect which you can pick up at any Arts & Crafts store or of course an office supply store.
Several sheets of newspaper cut slightly smaller than the blotting paper.

WHAT TO DO:

You want to drill FOUR holes, one in each corner of the boards that you cut from the plywood.

First, place the blotting paper on one of the boards to make sure that the paper is smaller than the boards. Centre the paper and mark on the board with a pencil where you want to drill your holes. REMEMBER you do not want to drill through the paper.
Now, clamp the two boards together lining them up squarely so you will be certain that the holes are directly on top of each other.
Go ahead and drill the FOUR holes.
Next, just slide your bolts through the two pieces of plywood that you drilled, place the washers over the bolts, and then screw the wing nuts on.
THAT'S IT!

Straightforward isn't it?! Now that you have made your flower press you will want to start pressing your flowers immediately!

Follow my guide on pressing flowers which is just as easy to follow.

Here you will see where to lay the blotting paper and the newspaper in the press and also which types of flower are suitable for pressing.

WHAT IS MY RING FINGER SIZE?

If you are looking to purchase a ring for yourself or as a gift and you are uncertain of the ring size you need then just follow these easy steps!

Firstly, you want to make sure that you measure the finger when it is at its largest. You don't want to buy a ring that is too small and the wearer struggles to get it on their finger!

Fingers swell in the heat, so do not measure cold fingers. For an accurate reading it is best to measure the finger at the end of the day when the finger is at its largest.

To measure the finger all you need is :

1) a piece of string, say 6 inches long (a strip of paper will do just as well)

2) a pen to mark the string/paper

3) a ruler

Firstly, wrap the piece of string or paper around the base of the finger that you want to measure.

Then, take the pen and mark on the string or paper where it overlaps to form a complete circle around your finger.

Then, run the string or paper along your ruler to measure it's length in mm.

Lastly compare this measurement with the chart below to find the nearest measurement to yours. This will then be the size you require.

Ring Size (USA) = length (mm) : 4 = 46.5 4.5 = 47.8 5 = 49 5.5 = 50.3

6 = 51.5 6.5 = 52.8 7 = 54 7.5 = 55.3 8 = 56.6 8.5 = 57.6 9 = 59.9 9.5 = 60.3

10 = 61.6 10.5 = 62.8 11 = 64.1 11.5 = 65.3 12 = 66.6 12.5 = 67.9 13 = 69.1

If you want to buy the ring as a surprise for someone you can always ask a close friend or relative of the recipient if they know their ring size.

Or you can always take one of their rings and run it down a tapered candle or similar item, then measure the circumference as before with a piece of string or strip of paper and compare the measurement to the chart.

As a general rule you will find that your fingers will be a half size larger on your dominant hand (the hand that you write with)

Another point to consider is if the wearer suffers from arthritis and has wider knuckles than the base of their finger. In this case measure both the knuckle and the base of the finger and go for a point somewhere in between.

It is being held on the 24th and 25th June and is looking to be a great weekend. So if you are in the area then please come along for what should be a fun event.

That weekend is also when England are scheduled to play their second round match in the World Cup. Being from England and a big football nut i will be anxious to hear about the score. Maybe i will hunt out a TV for a couple of hours and "take a break" watching the game!

Hi, my name is Rich, and along with my wife Johnette, we own a company called Nature by Dezign. Now that we have a web site www.naturebydezign.com it also seemed the thing to do to start a blog. After a few hours searching around the internet reading up on what one was it was decided over a cup of coffee and an overwhelming vote of two to one that i would be the one to write it. (our dog voted against me)

So here is a brief introduction about us and our company.

Nature by Dezign is a company based in NC, USA that enjoys bringing to its customers unique and exciting fashion items from around the world, that includes a wonderful collection of sterling silver jewelry, as well as fashion handbags that will have any handbag fiend drooling!

Especially our real flower plastic handbags that truly capture the essence of nature. You really have to check these flower handbags out. They actually have real flowers incorporated into their design. They are so unique and my wife receives loads of compliments whenever she carries her's out. Of course, she has about five different ones herself! As well as three different colors of our bamboo handbags! I guess those are the benefits of having your own jewelry and handbag business.

Formed in 2005 by husband and wife team Rich & Johnette Boulter (I am from England and my wife is from the U.S) , we are continually seeking new ways to present our handmade products to a larger audience.

Principally operating from a kiosk based in a key mall in the Triad region of NC, we were overwhelmed by the response we received from our customers about our original product line. Encouraged by this, We have expanded our operations and regularly attend trade shows, enjoying success in Florida, Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, as well as North Carolina. Thank you to everyone who has come along to see us and our fashion items.

Nature by Dezign have a growing online presence, reaching out to more people on a wider scale. I hope that this blog helps people to learn more about us and our wonderful fashion products.

CHARITY AID

Nature by Dezign are an environmentally aware company that wholeheartedly supports the work of environmental charities. We are especially keen to help raise the awareness of climate change which is an issue that is affecting us all and will continue to do so.

Global Warming is a major concern and we have seen that an increase in overall temperature is changing weather patterns. Hurricanes and other extreme weather are likely to be more severe and devastating, as witnessed recently by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Nature by Dezign wish to aid the awareness of these key environmental issues by donating $2.00 every time our customers make an online purchase.
